Douglas, a.k.a. Amy Douglas White, follows up her emotionally explosive solo debut, Ashes, with a remix EP and a vinyl release of the original album (due out November 5^th, 2021). Dense with pulsing rhythms and celestial layers of vocals, Ashes was met with critical acclaim, including a stellar review by Mitch Mosk of Atwood Magazine: “A vivid and visceral upheaval, Douglas’ solo debut is an immersive emotional and sonic overhaul. Ashes Remix EP is a genre-bending collection, including a fun pop EDM remix of Clouds by Swedish drummer and producer Kris Persson, a.k.a. Kris Passion.  Persson, who played live drums on Ashes and has toured with artists like Gunnar Gehl, said his goal with the remix was to give Clouds a future bass/pop-edm vibe, while preserving the emotion of the original track: “The beautiful melodies against the moody backdrop really resonated with me when I first heard Clouds. I imagined this remix as a dreamlike echo of the original, with the vocals anchored in reality and the music representing the infinite sub-conscious.“

Douglas’ half-spoken bilingual ode to longing and obsession, Come With Me, inspired Tel Aviv-based electronic musician and producer, Gidon Schocken, to focus only on certain lyrics and have them repeat throughout the track, creating a spacious canvas around the vocals. “Something about listening to Amy singing in a different language brought up a feeling that was stemmed in a deeper place,” says Schocken. 

Douglas let the producers choose which tracks they felt inspired to remix, giving way to two contrasting versions of another Spanish dreamy track, Dime. The first remix is by the duo JEX_Records, made up of Carlos Cháirez (a.k.a. XrayTheBaby), a 12-time Grammy & Latin Grammy-nominated musician, producer and founding member of Mexico’s premier pop electronic band Kinky, and Michael Tritter, a full-time synthesizer nerd, programmer, producer, arranger and performer for pop music, film and television. “We were inspired by poolside vibes, where we listened to the original track and did a lot of the recording,” recall JEX. The instrumentation used on the remix was all hardware, including a modular system for the bass, an ARP 2600 for the primary synthesizer leads, a Moog Opus 3 for additional synths and ambience, a guitar, and an MPC for the drums. 

The second remix of Dime is by British DJ and producer, Linus O’Brien, who has partnered with Douglas in the past as indie techno duo Linus and Amy. Together they released two albums under the UK label Default Position, including a remix album featuring techno legends Howie B., Terry Francis, Alexi Delano and Mononoid. Linus has been producing and spinning techno for over 20 years, with music being played and charted by prominent electronic artists, including Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Jeff Mills, Pete Tong and Danny Tenaglia. “Working with Amy’s lush vocals is always invigorating, and this remix was no exception.  Her passion is keenly present and it was very easy to get inspired,” says Linus. In 2017, Linus started an underground techno event in downtown Los Angeles called PANIC, featuring guest DJs like Bushwacka!, Jamie Anderson, Woody McBride, Mr. C, John Selway and Hollen. Linus is planning to release a new techno album, Panic with Me, later this year.

The last track on the EP is a remix of Douglas’ powerful and rapturous first single, Cigarettes, by XOR, the solo project of Secret Shame bassist Matthew. “I wanted to make the choruses even bigger,” XOR notes, “so I chilled out the beat, opening up more space in the verses and bridge so when the chorus hit – even though it hit just as hard before – it felt larger.” After a handful of EPs, remixes, and cover songs, XOR released his first full-length album in July 2021.

Douglas is a veteran LA-based singer, songwriter and musician who is previously known for contributing background vocals on M83’s seminal album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, performing alongside Mariqueen Maandig Reznor in West Indian Girl, and playing in the electropop band The Controversy. Ashes (douglas.fanlink.to/ashes) is her first solo album as Douglas (released on 4/2/21) and has been premiered, charted, and acclaimed by media outlets both domestically and internationally.
