Launched at the dawn of 2017, Transmission Publicity is an inclusive music PR, management and consulting firm owned and operated solely by Spencer Scanlon (he/him), a veteran music publicist and visual artist behind the mixed media series, Secret Portals. After cutting his teeth at the longstanding independent music PR firm Girlie Action from 2010-2012, Scanlon went on to become the Publicity Manager at Republic Records and Casablanca Records (Universal Music Group) in 2013. Quickly becoming disillusioned with the major label world, he dove headfirst back into the independent PR world to become the Director of Publicity at Crash Avenue. Prior, he put in time doing freelance work for Pitchfork, Central Park SummerStage, The Village Voice and Rykodisc (Frank Zappa’s label, RIP). After living and working in Brooklyn for over a decade, he and his family migrated south and are now based in Asheville, NC.
Scanlon’s clients past and present are as diverse as his experience, having worked on press campaigns for iconic artists like Morrissey (who didn’t fire him), The Cure, Santigold, The Rapture, DFA Records, Mogwai, Shit Robot, The Weeknd, Kavinsky, James Blake, The Lonely Island, Stars, Ghost, Sebadoh and countless others. He also played a vital role in launching the careers of artists like Christopher Paul Stelling, Shit Robot, Holy Ghost!, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Secret Shame, Black Grapefruit, Blood Cultures, Quiet Hollers, Karate, Guns & Tanning, The Fluids and more.
Transmission Publicity was formed out of a passion for seeking out new talent and developing artists from the ground up, which is where Scanlon’s strengths lie.
