Secret Portals are surrealist mixed-media windows into otherworldly realms, cast in perpetuity in high-grade resin. Ever-evolving, Secret Portals is a visual art adventure from the Asheville-based music industry veteran Spencer Keasey Scanlon – founder and owner of the independent music publicity and consulting firm, Transmission Publicity.
Fusing natural, artificial and metaphysical elements from the ancient past, present and beyond, Secret Portals’ aim is to conjure and capture cryptic, thought-provoking vignettes from the recesses of the mind. Featuring mixed-media from found objects to meticulously-cut vintage magazine cut-outs, pieces also frequently feature stunning crystals and minerals hand-dug by Scanlon during frequent mining expeditions in Hiddenite, NC. Recent new works include experiments in synthesizing Mica and adjacent North Carolina minerals into Space Dust – in turn, casting it into jewelry, coasters and more.
A lifelong music publicity expert by default, Scanlon has worked with iconic artists like Morrissey (who didn’t fire him), The Cure, Santigold, The Rapture, DFA Records, James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), Holy Ghost!, Mogwai, Shit Robot, The Weeknd, Kavinsky, James Blake, The Lonely Island, Ghost, Sebadoh, Christopher Paul Stelling, Secret Shame, The Dead Milkmen and countless others.
Secret Portals also specializes in offering gorgeous, hand-dug and ethically-sourced crystals and minerals native to North Carolina, along with other highly-curated vintage décor and art. You can find its (meta)physical wares within Marquee, at 36 Foundy Street in Asheville.
